He was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, on June 24, 1958. He lived most of his life in Central Florida and graduated from the University of Central Florida with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in political science. He also earned a Doctorate in History from Florida State University. Before he began teaching in the classroom, he developed social studies textbooks for the nation’s secondary school market with the publisher Harcourt Brace in the 1980s. In 2008, he ran for U.S. Congress in Florida while still teaching. Currently, he is studying the historical role of the economy on the political behavior of the South in the United States and is writing a biography of Claude Pepper. He is also completing his twenty-first year at Keiser University.
