Alumni Testimonial – Keyra Baca

When I graduated from high school, I had a clear goal in mind. I wanted to major in Political Science in an environment where I could develop my potential to the fullest. Within the first week of my arrival in Spring 2014, I realized this was the best place for me to achieve that goal. From the very beginning, all of my courses were taught fully in English. As a Spanish native speaker, this was a challenge for me because I was not used to writing and speaking in English all the time. However, this was a crucial experience for me because now I work at a non-profit organization where English is spoken all day, every day.

On campus, students have the opportunity to meet people from different countries and backgrounds. This is an advantage because it helps students to learn about cultural diversity, to listen and to gain a better understanding of others’ perspectives, and to exercise tolerance and respect for others. As a Political Science major, my courses focused on critical thinking, analysis, and debate. Our professors facilitated class discussions where we analyzed class materials and applied conflict resolution techniques. In addition, being exposed to a different environment, in a different town away from my family helped me to become more independent, responsible, and self-sufficient.

One of my favorite things about Keiser University is its clubs and extracurricular activities. Each club is led and organized by the students, which helps to boost important life skills such as leadership, creativity, collaboration, teamwork, and assertive communication. During my four years at Keiser, I was elected Secretary of the Student Government Association in 2016 and voted President of the Chess Club in 2017. Through these two roles, I became more organized and gained more confidence in myself.

Even though I graduated more than a year ago, I still think about the experiences I had and the friends I made at Keiser University. I’m thankful for the mentorship and wisdom of the professors who motivated me to keep working towards my goals, no matter how complex they might seem. For all of these and more, I will always choose Keiser University. Let’s go Seahawks!
