Silvio Gutiérrez graduated as the Salutatorian this year, and gave a memorable speech that highlights the important role this generation of young professionals will have to undertake. Read an excerpt of his speech below:
“Throughout this time, I realized that each one of us has something unique and special. Also, I had the opportunity of getting valuable knowledge, building long-lasting friendships, and sharing unforgettable memories. Despite all the hardships and challenges, we made it to this point. We are here (as graduates) because we persevered through college life’s challenges and obstacles. I think that being persistent means doing many sacrifices. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “an investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Like it or not, sacrifices are part of life, so it is not something that we should be afraid of, but something we should be willing to take on.
Finally, we need to remember that leaving a legacy and achieving greatness is not about collecting money and recognition, but offering hope and happiness to our people. We are not a generation with poor values and lack of education, as some people may say…we are actually a generation with enough courage and energy to make this world a better place.”
